Welcome to the Vintage Floppy Disks website!

As an introduction, please read a few words from the founder and the owner of this website who has been collecting everything floppy disk related for a few years now.

Why floppies?

"The rise and fall of the floppy disks as a data storage technology overlaps with my youth. This is already a good base for the nostalgia is feel regarding this technology.

As a 2nd class stamp collector I always admired how deep the universe of collecting is if you are really into it, which I barely am, how many knowledge is hoarded together in those thick stamp catalogues.

Collecting floppy disks started when I spotted an online listing giving away about 100 pieces of floppy disks practically for free. I bought the pack and started examining the disks, the sleeves, the boxes with the eye of a collector. I discovered marks, nuances I would have never discovered if I did not have this experience with collecting already.

The next question was: ok, how many different disks there are? Where are the catalogues? There were no catalogues at all! If you want to collect floppy disks in any organized way, all you have is Reddit subs, forums on websites designed in the 90s, old magazines some good souls scanned and published online, etc.

That is when I started my mission of collecting and cataloguing floppy disks as colorful remnants of a nostalgic technology."

How the catalogue works?

Half of the work is maintaining a collection of digital images sourced from many online auction sites around the world. This work is strictly done for educational and non-commercial purposes, respecting the copyrights of all parties involved. When an uncatalogued item is found online, its images are collected, transformed into a standard format found everywhere in the catalogue and then published on this website.

This collection work is the core of the catalogue. A simple catalogue number system has also been formulated to make the collection more organized.

How the private collection works?

The private collection is about all items physically possessed by the runners of this website. This is obviously a much smaller subset of the catalogue but our favourite part of the work. One can take out a couple of disks or sleeves from the collection any time, observe it to the smallest details, determine whether they are already catalogued or not, if not, take photos, edit them and publish them here in the collection etc.

The operators of this website hold all the copyrights of all of the images published in the private collection, respecting all the copyrights of the brands visible on the images of course.
